COMMERCIAL SOLAR TAX RELIEF IN THE UK: CAPITAL ALLOWANCES EXPLAINED

← Back to the Journal

For many UK businesses, one of the strongest reasons to invest in solar is tax relief. Solar panels are generally treated as plant and machinery, which means you may be able to deduct the cost from your taxable profits through capital allowances.

Important: this guide is general information, not tax advice. Rules depend on your business structure and circumstances, and they can change. Always confirm with your accountant before making a decision.

Annual Investment Allowance (AIA)

The Annual Investment Allowance lets businesses deduct the full cost of qualifying plant and machinery from profits in the year of purchase, up to an annual limit (currently £1 million). For many small and medium businesses, this can cover the cost of a commercial solar system in the year it is installed.

Solar panels and the special rate pool

HMRC treats solar panels as special rate assets. If your spend is above your available AIA, the remaining cost is usually claimed through the special rate pool at a lower annual rate, or through other first-year allowances available to companies. Your accountant can confirm which applies to you.

Who can claim?

  • Limited companies, sole traders and partnerships can usually claim capital allowances.
  • The business generally needs to own the equipment, not lease it.
  • Landlords and tenants should check carefully who can claim on a leased building.

Why it matters for payback

Tax relief reduces the effective cost of the system, and lower electricity bills continue for years after installation. Together, they can make the payback period much shorter than the upfront price suggests.
