WHAT AFFECTS THE COST OF COMMERCIAL SOLAR IN THE UK?

← Back to the Journal

There is no single price for commercial solar. Every business site is different, so the cost depends on what your building needs and what you want the system to achieve. Here is what actually drives the price, so you can plan and compare quotes properly.

1. System size and energy use

The biggest factor is the size of the system, usually measured in kilowatts peak (kWp). The right size is based on how much electricity your business uses, when you use it, and how much usable roof or ground space you have. A system that matches your daytime demand usually gives the best return, because you use more of the power you generate.

2. Roof type and condition

Flat roofs, pitched roofs, metal sheet, membrane and older roofs all need different mounting systems. If the roof needs repairs or a structural check first, that affects both cost and timing. It is far cheaper to find this out during a survey than after work has started.

3. Electrical infrastructure

Your existing distribution boards, cabling and supply capacity matter. Some sites need upgrades before solar can be connected safely. A proper site assessment identifies this early.

4. Grid connection

Larger systems usually need approval from your local Distribution Network Operator (DNO) before connection. The application process, and any network requirements, can affect timescales and cost.

5. Battery storage and EV charging

Adding battery storage lets you store surplus generation for later use, and EV chargers for staff, fleets or visitors can be planned alongside solar. Both add to the upfront cost but can improve how much of your generated energy you actually use.

6. Access, scaffolding and site logistics

Building height, access, working hours and safety requirements all influence installation cost, especially on busy commercial or industrial sites.

The best way to get an accurate figure is a site assessment. We review your premises, roof, electrics and energy usage, then give you technical recommendations before any proposal.

Questions to ask any installer

  • How was the system size calculated for my usage?
  • Has the roof and structure been assessed?
  • Is DNO approval included?
  • What monitoring, warranties and aftercare are included?
